The Seed of DEAD AIR

The idea of Dead Air was planted during a Twitch stream. The streamer was deep in a horror game, flickering lights, sudden jolts, that creeping sense of dread. Meanwhile, chat had drifted sideways into a debate about ASMR.

Some people swore by it. They said it helped them sleep, eased their anxiety, wrapped them in calm. Others? They hated it. Couldn’t stand the whispers, the closeness, the sound of someone breathing in their ear. I sat there watching, engaging in the conversation.. and then it clicked. This was the split I had always felt but never fully named. ASMR is marketed as safe, intimate, soothing, but it can just as easily feel invasive, unsettling, wrong.

That’s the line this story was born from.

What happens when silence is both a sanctuary and a threat? When the very thing that soothes you to sleep becomes the thing that haunts you? I realised silence isn’t truly neutral. It never has been. And that was the beginning of DEAD AIR
